Name: Named in 1839 by Gustav Rose in honor of Konstantin Vladimirovich Chevkin (1803-1875), Chief of Staff of the Russian Corps of Mining Engineers. Originally named simply chevkinite, the suffix was added by the IMA in 1987 to follow the Levinson rule for denoting the dominant rare-earth element.
